"It is beautiful. I love it." Emma rubbed her hand along the smooth red mahogany hull.

"You have to give me a ride in it someday. But when the weather is warmer. No more rides like that one to the wedding. I thought I never would warm up." Emma made a brrrrr sound then laughed artificially.

"Sure. Anytime." Lan realized she was being petulant. She dropped the part in the bucket of grease and stood up. "Did you need something?" Lan asked, wiping her hands on a rag.

"Something about the marina?"

"No." Emma walked slowly along the side, tracing her fingers along the polished rim of the deck.

"What brings you all the way out here this late?" Lan checked her watch.

"Would you believe me if I said I just wanted to see the boat you are working on?"

"I doubt it." Lan pushed her hands into her pockets.

"Would you believe me if I said I wanted to see where you lived?"

"Urn, probably not."

"Would you believe me if I said I wanted to explain about tonight?"

"Explain what? There's nothing you need to explain to me." "Well, I do, want to explain, that is," Emma added.

"You mean that woman you were with? She seems very nice. And hey, it is none of my business what you were doing," Lan quickly inserted.

"It isn't?" Emma asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Nope." Lan began putting her tools away.

"Well, I guess you're right. Technically it isn't any of your business. But I want to explain anyway."

"Why do you think you need to justify anything to me?" Lan continued to keep busy.

"You're a big girl. You can see whoever you want."

"Look, I know you saw me and Nicole together. I know you saw us holding hands." Emma followed Lan to the other side of the boat while she put tools in the cabinet. "And I saw that look on your face."

"Nicole?" Lan asked as she dropped a pair of pliers in a bin.

"Yes, Nicole Francis. She's a real estate agent from Tulsa and very successful. She's been a member of the million-dollar club for eight years. She really has a golden touch."

Emma smiled reflectively. "Yes, I saw the golden touch." There was the green monster wagging his ugly tongue again, Lan thought. "I'm very happy for you, Emma. Really." Lan gave Emma her most sincere look.

"Dammit! I don't want you to be happy for me. That is not why I came out here." Emma scowled.

"If you're out here to incite some kind of jealousy, it isn't working. Jealousy is for people who are already in a relationship. I'm not jealous. I'm just telling you what I saw. Me and everyone else in Giovan's. It was hard to miss."

"If you think I should be ashamed of holding her hand, you have another thing coming."

"Who said you should be ashamed? I just thought ..." Lan's voice trailed off. She tossed another stick of wood in the stove and pulled her sweater on over her head.

"Thought what?" Emma asked with a puzzled look.
